John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson, working with Morris-Aubry Architects of Houston, designed the tower for developer Gerald D. Hines. Transco Energy Corporation was the first major tenant. Groundbreaking was in August 1981, and it opened in 1983. The infobox gives a cost of 300 million dollars and a style of Postmodern.

It has 64 stories. The roof is 902 feet (275 m) in the infobox, 901 feet in one passage and 909 feet in another. It was designed as two stacked sections, floors 1 to 40 and 41 to 64, with separate elevator banks. The article does not name its materials.

A 7,000-watt beacon on top sweeps the sky and can be seen up to 40 miles away. Hurricane Ike damaged the top in 2008. There is no public observation deck. Invesco bought it in 2013 for 412 million dollars.
