Burg Vischering in Lüdinghausen was built by Bishop Gerhard von der Mark to counter a second castle built by the Von Lüdinghausen family. It became the seat of the Droste zu Vischering family, hereditary administrators serving the Bishops of Münster. The article calls it the most typical moated castle in the Münster region, with a moat fed by a side-arm of the River Stever, defensive gateways and a drawbridge.

A fire destroyed the castle in 1521, and it was rebuilt on its existing foundation. Renaissance renovations added windows and a large bay, which made it more liveable but reduced its defensive character. The keep was removed during those works. The horseshoe-shaped main building has three stories, sandstone walls and red tile roofs.

It houses the Münsterlandmuseum, an exhibit on knighthood for children and a cafe-restaurant. Air attacks in World War II caused only minor damage.
