Count Wilfred the Hairy built a provisional church in 886, and a Romanesque cathedral commissioned by Abbot Oliba was consecrated in 1038. The present cathedral was designed by Josep Moretó i Codina in an academic neoclassical style, with a Doric and Tuscan facade and interior. The first stone was laid on September 24, 1781, and it was consecrated on September 15, 1803. The infobox gives marble and brick, while the text describes a white stone facade. The Romanesque bell tower, 151 feet (46 m) high, stands apart.
Fire in 1936 burned the building, and the article describes the damage to the vaults in two different ways. Josep Maria Sert redecorated the interior from 1939, and it reopened in 1945.
It is the seat of the Diocese of Vic and a Historic Artistic Monument since 1931. The Episcopal Museum occupies the upper cloister.
