Trinity Church stands in Copley Square in Boston's Back Bay. It is an Episcopal parish founded in 1733. The earlier church on Summer Street burned in the Great Boston Fire of 1872, and the current building was constructed from 1872 to 1877 under the rector Phillips Brooks. Henry Hobson Richardson was the architect, and Stanford White, then in his office, designed the main tower. The building is regarded as the birthplace and archetype of the Richardsonian Romanesque style.

It is built of Dedham granite on a modified Greek cross plan. The central tower rises 211 feet (64 meters), and the whole structure rests on about 4,500 wooden piles.

Murals cover over 21,500 square feet inside, painted by American artists led by John La Farge. The windows include work by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris's studio. It became a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970.
