WZMH Architects and Roger Saubot designed the tower, built from 1982 to 1985. The site had been reserved for a twin of Tour Areva, but investors cancelled that project after the 1974 oil shock. The article names no client or materials and calls the style modern architecture.

It has 48 stories, arranged as five superimposed bodies, of which the tallest has 48 floors and the next two have 44 and 37. The roof stands at 187 meters (614 ft) and the antenna spire reaches 190 meters (623 ft). The floor area is 130,000 square meters. The infobox gives the spire as 620 feet, against 623 in the text.

It was named Tour Elf from 1985 to 1999, then Tour TotalFinaElf until 2003, and then Tour Total. It serves as the headquarters of TotalEnergies.
