The composer Jacques Offenbach founded the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in 1855 as a private enterprise. Its first performances were on July 5, 1855, at the Salle Lacaze, a small hall for about 300 spectators. In October of that year Offenbach petitioned to merge with the Théâtre Comte, and the merged company opened at the larger Salle Choiseul on December 29, 1855.
The Salle Choiseul held about 900 spectators and was warmer, more luxurious and more comfortable. Offenbach's Orphée aux enfers premiered there on October 21, 1858. The hall was later torn down and rebuilt larger, to hold 1,100.
Offenbach resigned as director in January 1862. The theater stands at 4 rue Monsigny and is active today, with regular stage plays.
