Filippo Juvarra planned the Teatro Regio from 1713 but died before the cornerstone was laid in 1738 under Charles Emmanuel III. Benedetto Alfieri supervised construction, and Bernardino Galliari decorated the interior. It was inaugurated on December 26, 1740, with about 1,500 seats and 139 boxes on five tiers. The article says it was enlarged in 1905 to 2,415 seats.
A fire in February 1936 destroyed everything except the facade. Carlo Mollino designed the rebuild, which reopened on April 10, 1973. The new interior is contemporary, with an elliptical plan, 1,750 seats and an acoustic shell, set behind the original facade. Custom-cut bricks form a star-like relief on the facade.
The City of Turin owns it. The season runs from October to June.
