Taipei's first permanent station was built in 1897 under Japanese rule and moved east of its current site in 1901. The underground railway system was completed on September 2, 1989, and rail service moved into the new building on September 5. The old building and a temporary station were then demolished. The article names no architect for the central building. Fumihiko Maki was chosen to design two adjacent skyscrapers and oversee the renovation.

The central building is rectangular, 489 feet (149 m) long and 361 feet (110 m) wide, with six stories above ground and four below. The ticketing hall has a skylight. Metro lines opened in 1997 and 1999, and high-speed rail service began on March 2, 2007.

The interior was renovated from February to October 2011. Daily ridership is about 122,150. The article names no owner.
