The Stopera is a complex at Amstel 1 in central Amsterdam that houses both the city hall and the opera house. The client was the city government. The opera opened on September 23, 1986, and the city hall followed two years later. Wilhelm Holzbauer and Cees Dam are named as designers.

The building is a massive block with a curved front facing the Amstel River, clad in red-orange brick and corrugated metal, with white marble on the curve. Planning began in 1915, and the site was in the former Jewish district. Construction in 1982 caused riots, and the project ran 112 million guilders over budget.

Its tenants include the city government, the Dutch National Opera and the Dutch National Ballet.
