The Deutscher Theaterverein, founded on February 4, 1883, raised funds for a new theater. The infobox names Fellner & Helmer, the text says plans were developed with Karl Hasenauer, and it also says the Prague architect Alfons Wertmüller designed it. It was built within 20 months, and performances began on January 5, 1888 with Wagner's Die Meistersinger. The decor is neo-rococo and the auditorium seats 1,041.
It opened as the New German Theatre and closed in September 1938. It was renamed Deutsches Opernhaus under occupation, then the Smetana Theatre in November 1949. The infobox lists a rebuild in 1960 without details.
It became the Prague State Opera after the Velvet Revolution and belongs to the Ministry of Culture. It stands on Wilsonova street.
