The Star Mosque, also called Tara Masjid, stands on Abul Khairat Road in the Armanitola area of Dhaka. Sources give conflicting dates for its construction, either the late eighteenth century or the first half of the nineteenth. The original builder was Mirza Ghulam Pir. The original design was a simple rectangular plan with three domes, the central one the largest, and corner towers.

In the early twentieth century a local businessman, Ali Jan Bepari, renovated the mosque. He covered the domes and walls with a mosaic of broken china pieces and added blue star motifs, which gave the mosque its name. A verandah was added at the front, and in 1987 the prayer hall was extended with two more domes.

The mosque now has five domes and four minarets. It is featured on the 100 taka banknote.
