A Romanesque church, probably dedicated to St. Nicholas, stood here and was first mentioned in 1269. The present church was begun around 1316 and consecrated, or probably inaugurated, in 1319. The infobox gives completion in 1380, while the text says it may have finished by 1349. It is red brick Baltic Brick Gothic, likely modeled on the Marienkirche in Lübeck. The plan is a Gothic basilica with three naves, transepts and a pentagonal chancel with an ambulatory. The tower is 322 feet (98 m) high, and the oak altarpiece of 1611 is about 49 feet (15 m) tall.

The tower collapsed in 1420 and partly in 1442. Carl Georg Brunius guided a harsh reconstruction from 1847 to 1853, and Theodor Wåhlin led a restoration in 1904 to 1906. Iconoclasts destroyed much ornament in 1529.

The Church of Sweden owns it, and it is an active parish church.
