Prince-bishop Arducius de Faucigny began the present building around 1160, and it was consecrated on July 18, 1288. The article names no architect. It is a late-Gothic cruciform church of molasse sandstone and limestone, holding about 1,000 people. The Chapel of the Maccabees followed in 1397 to 1405.
At the Reformation the rood screen, side chapels and decorative art were removed, apart from the stained glass. A Neoclassical main facade was added from 1752 to 1756, and a new spire in 1897 and 1898. The article gives the founding of the first church as around 380 in the infobox and between 350 and 375 in the text.
It has been the principal church of the Protestant Church of Geneva since 1535. An archaeological site below it is accessible, and tower visits are offered on some full-moon nights.
