St. Michael's Church stands near the cathedral in Fulda. It was built from 820 to 822 for Abbot Eigil, and the monk Racholf was probably the architect. It served as a burial chapel for the Fulda monastery, which was founded in 744. It is considered the oldest replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Germany.
The rotunda and crypt date from the original construction. The building was extended in the tenth and eleventh centuries, and it has a west tower. The roof was rebuilt in 1618 with a conical form, and a north chapel was added in 1715 and 1716.
The church was restored in 1853. Its interior has wall paintings from the eleventh century. Its style is described as Carolingian, or pre-Romanesque.
