The city council and wealthy citizens funded the church and its furnishings. The infobox gives groundbreaking in 1250. The nave was finished around 1400, and the choir was begun in 1439 and largely completed by 1477. Konrad Roriczer largely completed the choir, and Jakob Grimm completed its vaults. The style is Gothic, with the choir in the late German Sondergotik style as a hall church. The article gives no materials.

It is 299 feet (91.2 m) long and 98 feet (30 m) wide, and the infobox lists a height of 266 feet (81 m). Two towers frame the west front, with a rose window about 30 feet (9 m) across. Veit Stoss's Angelic Salutation and Adam Kraft's tabernacle are inside.

It became Lutheran in 1525, was badly damaged in the Second World War, and was restored.
