St. Boniface's Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich, an unusual urban setting for a Benedictine house. King Ludwig I of Bavaria founded it in 1835, and it was formally dedicated in 1850. He founded it to revive Bavaria's spiritual life by restoring monasteries lost in the early nineteenth-century secularization. The style is Byzantine Revival.
The church holds the tombs of Ludwig I and his queen, Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Andechs Abbey, which Ludwig bought after its 1803 secularization, is now a priory of St. Boniface's.
The abbey is a member of the Bavarian Congregation. It was destroyed in World War II and only partly restored. Because the king and queen rest in its church, it is also a royal burial place.
