George Mathewson, a Dundee-born architect, designed St Andrew's Cathedral, which was built in 1836 and opened on August 7, 1836. The site lay at the western edge of the town's almshouse, which survived until the sixteenth century. The article calls it the oldest Catholic church in Dundee. It was dedicated as a cathedral on February 4, 1923. The facade is in the Victorian Gothic design.
The church seats about 1,000, and its floor slopes from the entrance toward the sanctuary. The sanctuary was added later, by removing the back wall and building over the clergy house, so the altar area is much higher than the nave. Two side altars honor the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
For years the basement halls served as the city's only Catholic school. It is the seat of the Bishop of Dunkeld.
