Maurits Post is named as architect, and Cornelis de Graeff had the country house built in the mid-17th century. The infobox gives a start of 1650, while the text dates the hunting lodge to 1674 to 1678. His son Jacob sold the property to Stadtholder William III in 1674. Louis Bonaparte extended it, and two wings were added from 1816 to 1821.

The infobox gives Neoclassical. The palace has three floors and 170 rooms, with a central block and two wings. The article names no materials. It is a Rijksmonument.

It was open to visitors from spring 2006 to 2017. The Made By Holland consortium bought it in 2017, with plans for a hotel, an event center and 65 houses on the grounds. The Royal Park Live music festival has been held there in July since 2016.
