Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana had Singha Durbar built in June 1908, and Kumar Narsingh Rana and Kishor Narsingh Rana were the architects. The article describes the style as Neoclassical and Palladian, with Corinthian and Baroque elements. It is brick and mortar. Before a fire in 1973, the palace had 8 courtyards and 1,700 rooms. The State Hall used imported Murano glass chandeliers, Belgian mirrors, English stained glass and Italian marble.

The palace became national property in 1953. A major fire on July 9, 1973, damaged three wings. The area was rebuilt on the old foundations. An earthquake damaged it in April 2015. On September 9, 2025, it was set on fire during protests, and the article says the main building was destroyed.

The Government of Nepal owns it, and it houses both chambers of Parliament and many ministries.
