Saint Dominic died in 1109 and was buried in the village church of what is now Santo Domingo de la Calzada, on the Camino de Santiago. Later in the twelfth century the church was rebuilt on a more ambitious scale and became a collegiate church. It was raised to cathedral status in the thirteenth century.
The article does not name an architect or describe the architectural style of the building. It does say the retable, sculpted by Damián Forment between 1537 and 1540, is in the Renaissance style. The facade carries statues of Emeterius and Celedonius, and the retable was moved from the east end in the twentieth century.
A pair of descendants of the chickens from the miracle attributed to Dominic are kept in the choir loft at all times. It is one of three cathedrals of its diocese, and it was designated a Spanish Cultural Heritage monument in 1931.
