Pope Paul I is listed as the putative founder of an 8th-century oratory on the site next to the Roman Forum. The church was known by the 10th century and was rebuilt in the 13th century by Honorius III, with a campanile and apse. The infobox gives Romanesque.

Carlo Lambardi designed the travertine porch and facade of 1615, and an interior rebuild began in 1595. The article names the architect Lambardi in one place and Lombardi in another. Bernini designed the confessio, built from 1638 to 1649, and his sculpture was lost during the French occupation of 1798. The floor and choir have Cosmatesque mosaics.

It is a minor basilica and a titular church. The Olivetan Benedictines have cared for it since 1352. The article gives no visiting hours.
