San Stae stands on the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce district of Venice. The name is a Venetian abbreviation of Saint Eustachius. The church was founded at the beginning of the eleventh century and reconstructed in the seventeenth. Domenico Rossi designed the Baroque main facade in 1709. Statues on it are by Giuseppe Torretto, Antonio Tarsia, Pietro Baratta and Antonio Corradini.

Inside is a tomb of the Mocenigo family. The presbytery ceiling canvas is by Bartolomeo Letterini, with wall canvases by Giuseppe Angeli. Small paintings of the Apostles include a Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew from 1721 by a young Giambattista Tiepolo, and works by Pittoni, Piazzetta and Sebastiano Ricci.

The church hosted the Russian pavilion for the 11th International Architecture Exhibition.
