The Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas stands at Väinölänniemi in Kuopio. It is the main church of the Kuopio Orthodox Parish and the seat of the Orthodox Diocese of Karelia. The master builder Aleksander Isakson of Vyborg designed it. It was built in 1902 and 1903 and consecrated in 1904 by Archbishop Nikolai, the second Orthodox Archbishop of Finland.
The exterior is plastered and painted to look like red brick, with real brick underneath, and it resembles the red-brick garrison churches of the same period. The iconostasis was made at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Saint Petersburg, and Nikolay Bobrikov, the Governor-General of Finland, donated it. The church has eight bells.
It was renovated in 2003 and 2004, when the gilding of the iconostasis was renewed and the interiors were fully refurbished.
