Niederaltaich Abbey stands in the village of Niederalteich on the Danube in Bavaria. Duke Odilo of Bavaria founded it in 741, dedicated it to Saint Maurice and settled it with monks from Reichenau Abbey. Gotthard, abbot from 996 to 1022, later became Bishop of Hildesheim. A Gothic church was begun in 1260 under Abbot Hermann.

The Baroque abbey and church were created under Abbot Joscio Hamberger, who served from 1700 to 1739. The church was the first commission of the architect Johann Michael Fischer, who worked on it from 1724 to 1726. It was dissolved in 1803, and a lightning fire in 1813 began the demolition of the Baroque complex.

The abbey was refounded in 1918 from Metten Abbey. Since 1924 the monks have followed both the Roman and Byzantine rites. The church became a minor basilica in 1932.
