The Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Vilnius belongs to the Order of Saint Basil the Great and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Konstanty Ostrogski, Grand Hetman of Lithuania, built the first stone church with a belfry in 1514, in thanks for the victory at the Battle of Orsha. The original church was Gothic. Legend says a first wooden church was built by Grand Princess Uliana of Tver in the fourteenth century.
The church was transferred to the Basilian Order in 1609. Three chapels were added in the first half of the seventeenth century, and the church has four towers at its corners.
The Basilian monks were expelled in 1821, and part of the monastery became a prison. Adam Mickiewicz and other students were imprisoned there in 1823 and 1824. Services today are held only in Ukrainian.
