The Mahen Theatre stands at Malinovského náměstí 1 in Brno. After the Reduta theater burned in 1870, the city council commissioned the Vienna studio Fellner and Helmer, known for theater design, to build a replacement. The foundation stone was laid on July 18, 1881, and construction took about 16 months. It opened on November 14, 1882, as the Deutsches Stadttheater.
Its architecture combines Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It was described as one of the first public buildings in the world lit entirely by electric light.
It was renamed for Jiří Mahen in 1965. It was largely rebuilt in 1936, and it served as an opera house until 1965, hosting several Janáček premieres. Today it is the home stage of the drama ensemble of the National Theatre Brno.
