Kerimäki Church in Finland is described as the largest wooden church in the world. Anders Fredrik Granstedt designed it, and it was built between 1844 and 1847. It is 148 feet (45 meters) long, 138 feet (42 meters) wide and 121 feet (37 meters) high. It seats more than 3,000 people and can hold about 5,000 in all.
A rumor says the size came from a miscalculation between centimeters and inches. Later studies indicate that the church was meant to be this size, so that it could hold about half the population of the area at once.
The main building has no heating, so winter services are held in a smaller winter church, built in 1953 and remodeled in 1997. The church is not the tallest in the world. Taller examples include the Săpânța-Peri Monastery church in Romania at 78 meters.
