Haarlem railway station opened on 20 September 1839 on the first railway line in the Netherlands, between Amsterdam and Haarlem. The first station was a wooden building outside the Amsterdamse Poort. A permanent station on the current site followed in 1842, designed by Frederick Willem Conrad in a semi-Greek neoclassical style.

The present building was constructed from 1906 to 1908 to designs by Dirk Margadant. It is in the Art Nouveau style, which is the only station in the Netherlands built in that style. The tracks were raised to avoid street traffic. The building is a national monument.

The station has six platforms and serves the Amsterdam to Rotterdam line, among others. Scenes in the 2004 film Ocean's Twelve that depict Amsterdam Central Station were filmed on platform 3a.
