Gambir Station stands on Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur in Central Jakarta and is the terminus for most intercity trains across Java. A small stop opened on Koningsplein in 1871, and the larger Weltevreden Station opened on the present site on 4 October 1884. It was renovated in the Art Deco style in 1928 and renamed Batavia Koningsplein in 1937.

The Art Deco building was demolished in 1988, when rebuilding began alongside the elevated railway from Jakarta Kota to Manggarai. President Soeharto inaugurated the new station on 5 June 1992. It cost 432.5 billion rupiah. The consortium Inti Era Cipta carried out the construction.

The design is a Joglo style with a lime-green ceramic facade, as part of the postmodern design of the elevated stations. The building has three floors: the main hall, a waiting area and the platforms.
