The Flannan Isles Lighthouse stands near the highest point of Eilean Mòr, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. David Alan Stevenson designed it for the Northern Lighthouse Board. George Lawson of Rutherglen built it from 1895 to 1899 at a cost of 1,899 pounds, and it was first lit on 7 December 1899. The cylindrical masonry tower is 75 feet (23 meters) high and is attached to a one-story keeper's house.
In December 1900 the three keepers, James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur, disappeared. No bodies were found. An investigator concluded that a large wave had swept them away while they were securing a box near the west landing.
The light was automated on 28 September 1971, with a concrete helipad for maintenance visits. It is a Category B listed building.
