The Fatih Mosque stands in Durrës, Albania. It was completed in 1502, the year after the Ottoman conquest of the city, and is named for Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. It is also called the Small Mosque or the Old Mosque. The style is Ottoman, and the mosque has a single minaret.
The original minaret was reportedly targeted by Venetian ships from 1501 until about 1700. During the Ottoman period large fig trees hid it from view.
Under the regime of Enver Hoxha the mosque was closed during the period of state atheism, and its minaret was torn down around 1967. After 1991 the mosque was rebuilt in a simpler style, and restoration followed through the 1990s. It has been a Cultural Monument of Albania since 1973 and is an active mosque.
