Espoo Cathedral stands in the Espoon keskus district near the Espoonjoki river. It is the oldest preserved building in Espoo. It was built from 1485 to 1490 as a medieval parish church, supervised by an unknown master known as the Espoo master. Later it was converted into a more spacious cruciform church, and only the eastern and western parts of the nave remain from the medieval building.
The vaults and walls carry murals of biblical scenes and daily life, painted largely in the 1510s. They were covered in the eighteenth century as crude and superstitious, and were uncovered and conserved in 1931. The campanile was completed in 1767.
A parish hall was finished in 1995. In 2004 the Diocese of Espoo was established, and the church became its cathedral.
