Disentis Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the town of Disentis in the canton of Grisons, eastern Switzerland. It is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. Its position on the Lukmanier Pass gave it strategic importance. Tradition holds that Placidus and Sigisbert founded it, but the current view dates its foundation to the early eighth century, with the earliest traceable structure around 700.
It was a Reichskloster, answerable directly to the Emperor, and its feudal territory, called Cadi, held wide autonomy until 1799. The buildings were refurbished from 1683 to 1704 in the Baroque style, and the monastery church of St. Martin was built in 1712.
Napoleon's soldiers burned and plundered the abbey in 1799. A secondary school opened in 1880. It also holds a Romansh library, and its church was restored in 2016.
