The Castle of Diósgyőr stands in the historic town of Diósgyőr, now part of Miskolc in northern Hungary. A first castle, probably an earthwork and timber structure, was destroyed in the Mongol invasion of 1241 to 1242. The present Gothic castle is believed to have been built by King Béla IV after the Mongols left.
Under Louis I, who reigned from 1342 to 1382, it was rebuilt around a rectangular courtyard with four corner towers. Its Knights' Hall measured 25 by 13 meters, and a moat four meters deep surrounded it. The Peace of Turin was signed there in 1381. It later served as a holiday residence and wedding gift for queens of Hungary.
The Ottomans took it in 1596 and held it until 1687. Restoration began in 1953, and the castle was restored in 2014. Castle Plays are held there each May and August.
