The Cuvilliés Theatre, also called the Old Residence Theatre, is the former court theater of the Residenz in Munich, Bavaria. Elector Maximilian III Joseph commissioned it, and François de Cuvilliés designed it in the Rococo style. It was built from 1751 to 1753, and Johann Baptist Straub supervised the carving.
The red and gold interior has four tiers of 14 loges each, arranged in a horseshoe around the ground floor. The Electoral loge, opposite the stage, is supported by figures of Atlas and caryatids. The theater opened in 1753 with Ferrandini's opera Catone in Utica.
Bombs damaged it in World War II, and it was recreated in the 1950s and reopened in 1958. A renovation from 2004 to 2008 ended with a performance of Mozart's Idomeneo.
