The Co-Cathedral of St. Alexander stands on a square in the former Słoboda Lacka district of Kyiv. Polish landowners requested it to commemorate Tsar Alexander I's visit to Kyiv. The style is Classicism, and the plan is cruciform with a dome at the crossing. The original design was significantly scaled down.
Construction lasted up to twenty-five years, mainly for lack of funds and because of restrictions on Polish and Catholic institutions in Russia after the November Uprising. The church was completed and consecrated on August 30, 1842.
In the Soviet period a planetarium occupied the building. The parish priest, S. Kwaśniewski, was arrested on August 3, 1937 and executed on September 21, 1937, and the church was then closed. After the fall of communism it was renovated and became a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Kyiv-Zhytomyr. It is a monument of national significance.
