The Château de Montreuil-Bellay stands in the Maine-et-Loire department of France, on a Gallo-Roman village site above the Thouet river. The Plantagenet Foulques Nerra seized the castle in 1025.

After King Philip II defeated the English, the fief returned to Guillaume de Melun. He oversaw a major renovation that added massive walls and thirteen interlocking towers, with a single fortified gateway. During the Revolution, the castle held women suspected of royalism.

In 1822 Adrien Niveleau, a businessman from Saumur, bought it and divided it into rental units. His daughter led a restoration in 1860, and she redid the rooms in the Troubadour style. The château is a listed monument, and it gives its name to a premium wine.
