Capua Cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is the seat of the Archbishops of Capua. The first church on the site, traditionally attributed to Bishop Landulfo, dates from 856 and reportedly used columns from the local amphitheater. It was rebuilt in the tenth century and again in the late eleventh century under Archbishop Erveo, who also made the nave columns. The bell tower shows Lombard and Norman influences. It was given minor basilica status in 1827.
The main altarpiece of the Assumption is by Francesco Solimena. The crypt holds a Dead Christ by Matteo Bottiglieri and a Roman sarcophagus.
Bombardment destroyed the cathedral on September 9, 1943. It was rebuilt from 1949 to 1957.
